Jim received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from the University of Florida in 1989. He received his Juris Doctor degree from The John Marshall Law School in January 1994. Mr. Newman served as a Law Clerk to the Honorable John N. Hourihane, Circuit Court ofCook County, Chancery Division and served as an Illinois Supreme Court Rule 711 Prosecutor for the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office. He has been licensed to practice law in Illinois since 1994. He is further licensed to practice before the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals, the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois (Trial Bar) and the United States District Court for the Southern District of Indiana. Jim concentrates his practice in general corporate transactions and litigation, casualty defense, insurance coverage, general litigation, as well as civil appellate matters. He has taken over 70 cases to trial and has argued more than 40 cases before the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals, Illinois Appellate Courts, and the Illinois Supreme Court.
Jim routinely provides his insurance clients with lectures and seminars on coverage, insurer bad faith and other assorted litigation issues. He has assisted his insurers in the drafting of general casualty policies and their subsequent submission and approval with the Illinois Department of Insurance. He has been an active member of the Illinois Association of Defense Counsel (IDC) and the Defense Research Institute (DRI)
Jim serves as outside general counsel for businesses across a wide spectrum of industries, and his practice also includes the drafting and negotiation of all manners of commercial contracts. His transactional experience, combined with his skills as a litigator, problem-solver and counselor, makes him ideally suited to help growth-oriented clients.
